Finnvær lighthouse
A weather-beaten outpost in Frohavet - built in 1912 to guide seafarers safely between the low islands of Froan.
A light at the very edge of the open sea
Finnvær lighthouse stands on Valøya in the Finnværet island group, in the north-west of Froan on the Trøndelag coast. The station was established in 1912 after local calls for better lighting. The light marked the low islands and made the approach into Frohavet safer for everyone travelling along the coast off Frøya.
The station was both a workplace and a home for the lighthouse keeper and his family. It was electrified in 1964 and later converted to a rotating-crew station. In 1985 the lighthouse was automated and destaffed, and a new beacon took over the task.
The old lighthouse setting still stands, surrounded by low islets and the open seascape of the Froan nature reserve. Finnvær lighthouse is a well-preserved reminder of life and work at one of the most remote lighthouse stations on the Trøndelag coast.
